Ronaldo: Penalty appeal

FULL-TIME Pompey win 1-0 after stout defending and winning a penalty. Utd will wonder how they lost this game after hitting the post, having efforts cleared off the line and having a clear-cut penalty turned down.

90 (+3) mins - Vidic brings Baros down for a Pompey free-kick which they are in no rush to take. Utd win the ball when they do and press forward for the last time but Pompey hold firm.

90 (+2) mins - Pompey keep the ball in the Utd half to run the clock down.

90 mins - Four minutes of injury time are announced.

88 mins - Utd press and Anderson shoots from a tight-angle which goes wide.

86 mins - Utd win a corner but it is too long and Pompey clear. Utd win the ball back and press again but their attack breaks down allowing Pompey to go forward and win a throw-in. They eventually take but Utd get the ball.

85 mins - Utd win a free-kick 30 yards out. ronaldo takes with a dipping effort but it goes a yard over the bar. Unlucky.

81 mins - Hughes is on for Kranjcar as Pompey try to protect their lead.

80 mins - Utd win two corners in quick succession. Diarra takes the ball off Rooney who then takes the ball off Diarra and Utd press forward but Nani's cross is poor and James gathers.

78 mins - GOAL! Muntari scores in the left-hand corner past Ferdinand in goal to give Pompey the lead. Could this be Portsmouth's day?

76 mins - PENALTY Kuszczak brings down Baros after the Czech has taken the ball around him. The stopper is then sent off. He is unlucky because replays show he wasn't the last man.

75 mins - Campbell does well to get a cross away.

74 mins - Lauren comes on for Utaka.

73 mins - Evra hits a fantastic curling shot on goal which James has to be at full-stretch to push onto the right hand post. Fantastic keeping.

71 mins - Ronaldo plays a fantastic back-heal to put Carrick through. He takes the ball around James and has an open goal but Distin somehow manages to get back to deny Carrick on the line. Fantastic defending.

69 mins - Utd make a double substitution, bringing on Anderson and Carrick for Tevez and Hargreaves.

68 mins - Evra puts in a great cross but it is behind Tevez. Nani puts the ball back in but Ronaldo's header goes over.

65 mins - Ronaldo and Rooney play a delightful one-two on the edge of the box to set the Portuguese up for a shot but his effort is tame and rolls past the right post..

64 mins - Pompey again attack through Baros but he lays the ball back to Diarra when he should have shot. Diarra's effort is charged down and Utd clear.

61 mins - Pompey make a rare break forward and Baros appears to break free but the ref blows for a foul, much to the dismay of the Czech striker.

60 mins - Utd again win a corner and the ball eventually falls to Nani who shoots from the right but James saves.

58 mins - Utd win two corners in quick succession, the second of which is headed towards goal by Vidic and the ball falls to Tevez by the goal-line. Pompey desperately defend and get the ball away as far as Ronaldo on the edge of the box who shoots. His effort beats James but falls agonizingly inches wide of the right post.

56 mins - Utd press again, spreading the ball well across the pitch. Brown eventually puts a cross in but James easily gathers.

54 mins - Baros is on for Kanu.

53 mins - Ronaldo finds Rooney in acres of space to the right of the box but the striker rushes his shot and blasts over when he should have done better.

52 mins - Nani has a shot from in front of goal, 20 yards out but it is straight at James who saves.

51 mins - Ferdinand is again furious after being harshly adjudged to have fouled. Pompey take the free-kick 35 yards out but Utd clear.

50 mins - James has to be out quickly to gather the ball to break down a Utd attack.

49 mins - Pompey win a corner after the ref thinks Ferdinand has knocked the ball out but replays show it was clearly off Kanu. Ferdinand is furious. Pompey take the corner but it is poor and Utd clear.

47 mins - Utd start as they left-off, pressing the Pompey goal but James gathers a Nani cross.

46 mins - Utd get the second period underway.

Van der Sar subbed Man Utd emerge on the pitch without Van der Sar who has a groin problem and has been replaced by Kusczak.

HALF-TIME Pompey hold Utd at half-time after defending stoutly. Utd had two big changes in the half to score - firstly Ronaldo should have won a penalty after being brought down by Distin and then Tevez had his shot headed off the line by Johnson who covered well. It all makes for an exciting second period from Old Trafford.

45 (+ 1) mins - Utd win a corner and take the kick. James comes for the ball but misses but the ball falls kindly to a Pompey player who boots clear.

45 mins - One minute of injury time is announced.

44 mins - Utd win a corner through Distin but Pompey clear.

42 mins - Hreidarsson runs into the box and Ronaldo does well to get back and dis-possess him for a corner. Pompey take but Utd clear and break forward in number but the Pompey defence again hold firm and clear.

41 mins - Stalemate. Pompey keep hold of the ball in the middle of the park to control the game.

39 mins - Diarra is unluckily booked for a challenge on Ronaldo.

38 mins - Utd again press hard but Pompey's defence holds firm.

35 mins - Nani goes down under a challenge by Utaka in the box but the ref waves on. It is the right decision as the player in looking for a penalty.

33 mins - Utd press hard with crosses by Ronaldo and Nani but Pompey stand firm.

32 mins - Tevez shoots on goal after working his way across the 18 yard line for an opening but his effort is saved by James.

29 mins - Pompey win a free-kick on the left of the box but Kranjcar hits the ball too long and the danger passes.

28 mins - Campbell blocks a Scholes shot. Good defending.

26 mins - Pompey win a corner and the ball is knocked in the penalty area where it finally drops to Kanu but he is dis-possessed and Utd clear.

24 mins - Utd win a free-kick 25 yards out on the left after Tevez is fouled. Ronaldo fancies his chances and lets one fly but it hits the wall and Pompey clear.

21 mins - Pompey corner but Utd clear.

20 mins - Rooney is booked for raising his studs in a tackle. If Kranjcar had gone down he light have been sent off.

19 mins - Utd have the best chances of the game. Tevez takes the ball upfield from the corner and passes to Rooney, who takes the ball past James but is dis-possessed by Campbell, who covers back brilliantly. The ball falls to Tevez who shoots but his effort is headed off the line by the sole defender Johnson, who again does brilliantly well to cover.

18 mins - Pompey corner. Distin gets his head on it but it is not enough to send it goal bound and Utd clear.

16 mins - Kranjcar shoots from 25 yards out but it is straight at Van der Sar who saves easily.

14 mins - Stalemate at Old Trafford. The game is still lively but no more chances have been made.

11 min - Diop booked for a pull on Ronaldo. Utd take the free-kick on the left but the ball goes through to James.

9 mins - Utd win a free-kick 30 yards out in front of goal but the shot is straight into the Pompey wall.

7 mins - Rooney finds Ronaldo with a cross and his great first touch takes him into the box but he is charged down by Distin at the near post. Distin makes no attempt to play the ball and it is a clear penalty but the ref waves on.

5 mins - Utd win a free-kick on the right-hand edge of the box. Ronaldo sends over a powerful cross which Scholes meets at the near post but he heads out.

2 mins - Pompey corner. Pompey win a corner but Utd win the ball and break up field but the attack breaks down.

Kick-off Pompey get the game underway.

Saha injured Saha has injured his knee in the warm up and is replaced by Park on the bench.

Team news Sir Alex Ferguson has made three changes to Utd's side for the game.

Paul Scholes, Carlos Tevez and Owen Hargreaves return to the side in place of Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Anderson, who are all stood down following the UEFA Champions League victory against Lyon in midweek.

Portsmouth make one change from the side that lost to Everton at the weekend, with John Utaka replacing cup-tied Jermain Defoe.

Back to full strength, Pompey fancy their chances but the Red Devils seem unstoppable to present.
