FT: Reading 0 Burnley 2 (Agg: 0-3)

Full Time90 It's all over and Burnley are through to the Championship play-off final at Wembley after their terrific 2-0 victory at Reading tonight sealed a 3-0 aggregate triumph. Two stunning second-half goals from Martin Paterson and Steven Thompson knocked the stuffing out of the frustrated Royals but in truth they never even looked like conceding tonight and now the Clarets will face Sheffield United on May 25 for a place in the Premier League.

90 A long ball forward from Hunt looks for Kitson but it goes behind for a goal kick and that just about sums up Reading's night.

89 There will be three minutes of stoppage time to play before Burnley are confirmed as play-off finalists.

88 Gudjonsson is almost invited to shoot from about 20 yards out but his effort is sliced both high and wide.

87 The Burnley fans haven't stopped singing tonight and there's no chance of them stopping for the remaining few moments of this clash.

86 A long ball forward from Jensen causes confusion with Hahnemann charging off his line at the other end to get it only for Rodriguez to head it over him! The Reading goalkeeper looks back in horror but the ball rolls wide of the post.

85 Tabb has a crack from about 35 yards, looking to emulate the feats of Paterson and Thompson, but he doesn't have the same magic in his boots.

Substitution84 Chris Eagles is now brought on by Burnley for the closing stages of this contest to replace Elliott.

83 Just to clarify there is no away goals rule in the play-offs so Reading need three goals to force extra-time. However, with just seven minutes left, I think this is asking just a little too much!

82 The Royals do have a corner on the left but the ball into the box is comfortably claimed by Jensen.

81 Steve Coppell looks resigned to defeat and doesn't look like a man who believes in miracles.

Substitution80 The Burnley fans sing the name of Steven Thompson as he makes his way off the field to be replaced by Jay Rodriguez.

78 Several Reading supporters are starting to make their way to the exits as the reality dawns of another season in the Championship.

77 The delivery is a good one but McCann's powerful header is saved by Hahnemann.

76 Gudjonsson charges down the right wing and manages to win a corner for Burnley.

75 Coyle is furious and barks orders at his team now to allow Reading even a sniff of a chance to get back into this contest.

74 Reading have a free kick out on the left. When the ball comes into the area, it falls perfectly for Kitson, who turns and shoots but sees his effort fly high over the bar. He really should have done better and all of a sudden the Royals have spurned two great chances. If they'd scored both, the tie would be alive.

73 Gudjonsson runs up to the ball and blasts it hard, but this time Hahnemann watches it go wide.

72 Burnley win a free kick in shooting range after a foul from Gunnarsson and could the visitors bag another spectacular goal?

Substitution71 Paterson receives a standing ovation from the Burnley supporters as he leaves the field to be replaced by Joey Gudjonsson.

70 Kitson's long-range effort is blocked on the edge of the box but the ball breaks kindly for Long who smashes a fierce shot high over the bar. What a waste.

68 As stunning as those goals were, they've effectively sucked the life out of this clash as a contest! It's now being played at snails pace with both teams now knowing who the victor is.

67 Rosenior whips in a cross from the right wing for Hunt but the referee blows for a foul against the Reading man.

66 There still seems to be a few nervous faces in the away section but most of them are relaxed and just enjoying a Clarets party right now.

65 Quite clearly it's only the travelling Burnley supporters making all the noise while the home crowd lick their wounds. How can they raise their voices now?

64 Kitson pushes past Carlisle on the right wing and charges into the area but the referee's assistant waves his flag to indicate a foul.

63 Long kicks the corner flag out of the ground in sheer frustration as he can't prevent the ball going behind for a goal kick.

62 The subsequent ball into the box is punched away by Hahnemann and Reading must really get back in attack sooner than later.

61 Kalvenes gets down the left wing and wins a corner for Burnley when his cross is deflected behind.

60 The Burnley fans behind that goal are going bonkers right now. Their team is heading for Wembley and they've seen two fabulous goals to virtually get them there. Not long to hold out now but I can't see Reading scoring three times,

Goal59 GOAL THOMPSON - It's surely all over now as an astounding lob from Thompson from the edge of the box loops over Hahnemann and into the net.

Yellow Card58 Riley is trying to calm this clash down and his solution is to hand out another yellow card to Long.

Yellow Card57 Kitson is the latest man to see his name written in the referee's notebook and it's clear Reading's frustrations are boiling over.

Yellow Card56 Elliott looks baffled when he's shown the yellow card for a foul in midfield on Tabb.

55 Reading have a free kick out on the left of midfield but the resulting ball into the area drifts behind for a goal kick.

Substitution54 Reading in fact make a couple more substitutions with Jimmy Kebe and Church making way for Dave Kitson and Glen Little.

Substitution53 Reading make a change with Marek Matejovsky coming off to be replaced by Stephen Hunt.

52 If there's ever a goal which deserves to send a team into a play-off final, it's that one. Make sure you see the footage of that incredible strike - I haven't seen many better all season at any level.

Goal51 GOAL PATERSON - Paterson picks the ball up on the right of midfield before he cuts inside and drills an unstoppable shot from around 30 yards which sails into the net! What an absolutely brilliant goal!

50 The longer this game goes on at 0-0 the more jittery the Clarets will become. Their supporters tonight have hardly sat down due to all their nervous energy.

49 Gunnarsson flicks the ball into the area but frantic defending from Burnley ensures the danger passes.

48 Hahnemann is clearly as cool as a cucumber as he juggles the ball outside his area before smashing it upfield and out of play! Does he realise what is on the line?!

47 Burnley are on the front foot early in this second half and you'd have to say a goal from them should kill their opponents off.

46 Away we go in the second half with Burnley looking to cling on to their slender 1-0 lead against Reading. A place in the final against Sheffield United awaits, but who will get there?

Last word before the second half goes to Philipp Rogg, who says: "As a neutral i would like to see both sides in the Premier League but even though its been a close game and both sides are just as good as each other i still think Reading will win it due to the experience they got from the play-offs a couple of seasons back."

Tony Adby from Gold Coast Australia says: "I think that this will be a huge 45 minutes for the history of Reading. If we can't find a goal or two I am not sure that we can be up challengers in the Championship next year. If we do win and win at Wembley I have confidence that we can use this as a launching pad for next year. Come on you Royals."

Andy Sunter from NYC says: "Stuck at work and cannot see the game - but it's time to bring on Chris Eagles and put this tie to bed!"

Rodney Marshall has sent in an email which reads: "As a neutral - Ipswich fan - I reckon that the pressure is on Reading. Back in August, no one expected Burnley to have such a fantastic season. Reading, however, were expected to bounce straight back. Burnley have the tradition and loyal fanbase as opposed to Reading so I hope the Clarets can do it!"

Sky Bet Reading can now be backed at 21/10 with Sky Bet to be facing Sheffield United in the Wembley final while Burnley remain favourites at 7/20 with their 1-0 aggregate lead still in tact. The Royals are 11/10 to win this second leg while a Burnley triumph is 7/2 and the draw available at 11/8. In the next goalscorer market Long is the 7/1 favourite while Church is 17/2, Paterson 11/1 with Thompson and Blake both 12/1. Head now to skybet.com to place your in-running bets.

Half Time45 The referee blows his whistle to end a goalless first half but it's Burnley who still hold the 1-0 aggregate advantage in this play-off semi-final second leg.

45 Steve Coppell will be delighted with how his side have performed so far tonight but Owen Coyle will be far happier with the current scoreline. Can this change before the break?

44 There will be two minutes of stoppage time added at the end of this entertaining half at the Madejski Stadium.

43 Burnley look to break forward on the counter but the Reading defence is alert and prevent any shot being fired in.

42 The ball is delivered into the box but the Clarets clear the danger once again and their supporters behind the goal can breathe again.

41 Reading keep pressing forward and Church wins a corner down the left. There's not long for Burnley to hold out now but these are anxious moments.

40 Harding drills a low free kick which goes through the wall and Jensen gets down really well to make the save.

39 Long is through on goal but Jensen charges out of the area to make a superb challenge. However, Riley has awarded a free kick to Reading because the ball rebounded back off Long onto Jensen's arm outside the box. No red card though because it was accidental.

38 It seems as if Reading are just getting their breath back following their high-energy start to this second leg and as a result Burnley look at east right now.

37 Kalvenes swings a lovely floated cross into the area for Steven Thompson but it's just that bit too high and Reading can clear.

36 This is Burnley's 60th match this season but with a place in the Premier League as a prize, they are showing no sign of fatigue tonight.

Yellow Card35 In fact Duberry can count himself unlucky to receive a booking for his attempts to get to the ball first in the previous move.

34 Tabb curls a high cross into the box which finds its way to Matejovsky but despite cutt the ball back for Michael Duberry, Burnley manage to get it clear.

33 Kalvenes tackles Church inside the box but the ball still rolls behind for a Reading corner.

32 Burnley will be looking to ride out this storm in the hope Reading run out of steam but right now there is no sign of the Royals relenting.

31 Reading continue to attack in waves but credit must go to the visitors who are defending in numbers, dedication and cohesion.

30 Long tries to turn Caldwell inside the box but despite seemingly throwing himself to the floor, the referee opts against booking him for diving.

29 Gunnarsson charges into space down the right before knocking a low cross into the area which Carlisle does well to clear under pressure.

28 The cross into the area finds Chris McCann but his header is straight at Hahnemann.

27 Paterson drives forward for Burnley down the right and his deflected cross off Dan Harding goes behind for a corner.

26 The resulting corner comes to nothing as Reading avoid conceding what surely would have been a devastating blow to their promotion hopes.

25 Burnley come close to scoring when a powerful volley from Elliot takes a wicked deflection off Jay Tabb, but Hahnemann is relieved to watch the ball just come down over the bar.

24 Graham Alexander can be seen rallying his troops on the pitch - they will need all their strong characters to stand up and be counted tonight.

23 If Reading can maintain this tempo throughout the clash then Burnley are going to find it incredibly difficult to keep a clean sheet. But as it stands the Clarets are heading to Wembley.

22 Well, we did predict Reading could come blasting out of the blocks and they certainly have. Fortunately for Burnley though they are yet to turn this pressure into goals.

21 The pace of Long is giving the Burnley defenders the run around tonight but this time a fine challenge from Steven Caldwell prevents the Royals striker from shooting.

20 Simon Church finds space in which to shoot just outside the box but his connection is poor and the ball bobbles through for Jensen.

19 Matejovsky swings the ball into the box but Burnley are able to adequately clear their lines.

18 Reading win another promising free kick down the right wing after Blake completely takes out Liam Rosenior but incredibly avoids a booking.

17 Burnley now mount an attack of their own and a free header from Carlisle is just too close to Marcus Hahnemann to cause any problems.

16 The cross comes into the box and eventually falls for Long, who composes himself before drilling a firm shot at goal which Jensen does well to save. The ball comes out to Duberry but his rushed effort is lobbed over the bar.

Yellow Card15 Reading win a corner down the right wing when Christian Kalvenes is brought to ground by Christian Kalvenes, who is shown the yellow card.

14 Burnley boss Owen Coyle, who famously scored for Bolton in their epic 4-3 play-off final triumph over Reading back in 1995, watches on from the sidelines and he must be one nervous manager tonight.

13 It may not be a sell-out but the home fans are roaring their side on tonight. Burnley are doing most of the defending but are coping perfectly well at the moment.

12 Here comes Martin Paterson down the right but he's brought to a halt by more solid Reading defending.

11 Reading are taking the game to Burnley but so far are yet to create a clear opportunity to level the aggregate score.

10 Brynjar Gunnarsson shows his disgust when Riley gives a foul against Long for a challenge on Carlisle. Replays suggest Gunnarsson is right to be annoyed but Riley insists on letting him know who's in charge.

9 Long bursts down the right wing and whips a cross into the area but Brian Jensen is there to claw it away from danger.

8 Everyone is expecting a shot but Marek Matejovsky slides it into the area searching for Shane Long, but although it's a clever idea, the striker can't quite get to it in time before the ball rolls out for a goal kick.

7 Reading now have a free kick in a dangerous position around 25 yards from goal, with three players standing around it.

6 Burnley win a free kick at least 35 yards from goal but even so Robbie Blake looks intent on shooting. After a long and determined run up he slips at the moment of contact and the ball dribbles towards the box before Reading clear. The home crowd enjoyed that rather comical moment.

5 Reading look to push forward and win a corner down the left. However, when the ball is delivered into the area the referee, Mike Riley, spots a foul on Clarke Carlisle and awards Burnley a free kick.

4 Wade Elliott looks to cause from problems down the right wing but the Reading defence are able to contain his threat.

3 The Burnley supporters are mocking their Reading counterparts for not selling all their tickets, but considering the Royals haven't won here since January 27, is it any surprise!?

2 There's a cracking atmosphere inside this stadium tonight but I have to say the visiting Burnley fans are making most of the noise! Having agonisingly missed out on a place at Wembley in the Carling Cup, they'll be so desperate to make it tonight.

1 Right, away we go here at the Madejski Stadium where Reading are looking to overturn a 1-0 deficit as they bid to reach the Championship play-off final at Wembley. Who will make it? Stay tuned with us to find out!

The last word goes to Lee Haworth, who says: "Burnley fan here in the Virginia and I'm a nervous wreck! Praying for the first time in years and crossed everything there is to cross! Come on Burnley. I'll take a draw right now."

Dave Hennessey in Baghdad adds: "Really excited about the game tonight, fancy Reading to do it 2-0 with Long getting both of them."

I've received a few emails before kick-off. Colin Kenny says: "Please keep me informed as I try to follow the internet from Charlotte in North Carolina. Surely Burnley can reproduce the form of all those Cup games earlier in the season. Prediction Burnley to draw 1-1 and go through.

Sky Bet Head now to skybet.com to place your bets on tonight's encounter. Looking to defend their one-goal lead, Burnley are priced at 3/1 to win this clash but are rated the 4/7 favourites to qualify for the final at Wembley. We can probably expect Reading to attack from the kick-off and with home advantage they are 5/6 to win inside 90 minutes tonight - although the Royals are 5/4 to go through. The draw, which would be enough for Burnley to progress, is available at 9/4. My own tip for tonight requires a little bit of courage as I go for a 1-0 win for Burnley at 11/1. I feel if they can hold firm at the back, they could well punish Steve Coppell's men on the break and wrap up an aggregate victory. In the first goalscorer market, Reading's Shane Long is the favourite to strike first at 11/2 while Simon Church is rated at 15/2. For Burnley Martin Paterson is also 15/2 with Steven Thompson and Robbie Blake available at 9/1 and 11/1 respectively. There are plenty of other markets to chose from so go to skybet.com now to place your pre-match and in-running bets.

Reading boss Steve Coppell has opted to select youngster Alex Pearce to partner Michael Duberry in defence after Andre Bikey's red card during the first leg ruled him out of tonight's clash. Top scorer Kevin Doyle also misses out after he picked up an Achilles problem in the weekend's first leg but it's Simon Church rather than Dave Kitson who starts up front with Shane Long. Burnley manager Owen Coyle is boosted by the return to fitness of Wade Elliott, who missed Saturday's 1-0 win due to a leg injury sustained, but Joey Gudjonsson and Chris Eagles will have to make do with places on the bench after taking heavy hits.

The Reading team is: Hahnemann, Rosenior, Pearce, Duberry, Harding, Kebe, Gunnarsson, Matejovsky, Tabb, Church, Long. Subs: Federici, Cisse, Stephen Hunt, Little, Kitson.

The Burnley team is: Jensen, Duff, Carlisle, Caldwell, Kalvenes, Elliott, Alexander, McCann, Paterson, Thompson, Blake. Subs: Penny, McDonald, Gudjonsson, Eagles, Rodriguez.

Welcome to tonight's commentary from the Championship play-off semi-final second leg between Reading and Burnley at the Madejski Stadium. Owen Coyle's Clarets hold a slender 1-0 aggregate advantage from the first leg up at Turf Moor but they'll no doubt have their work cut out tonight if they're to book their place at Wembley, where they will face Sheffield United. Send me all your views to christopher.hammer@bskyb.com and I'll publish as many as time allows.
