Irvine: Has led Preston to safety

An intriguing contest looks on the cards as in-form Preston and Sheffield United clash at Deepdale.

The Lilywhites have moved into the comfort of mid-table on the back of just one defeat in their last eight matches, and four wins in five.

They have also only suffered one defeat in their last seven at home, and have recorded an impressive 10 victories at Deepdale this season despite their early season troubles.

Meanwhile, Sheffield United will still harbour aspirations of achieving a top-six finish as four wins in a row have lifted them to within six points of the play-offs.

They also have the joint second-best defensive record away from home in the division, with only Crystal Palace (16) conceding fewer on their travels than the Blades' 20.

Duo miss out

Preston will again be without Liam Chilvers and Kevin Nicholls for the home encounter.

Chilvers ruptured his Achilles tendon while warming up before the recent victory at Charlton and faces several months on the sidelines.

Nicholls faces another month out of action as he recovers from a knee injury, but full-back Michael Hart is nearing full fitness after a hip problem.

Beattie in contention

Sheffield United striker James Beattie is pushing for a start again after recovering from a groin injury.

Beattie, who has scored 15 goals this season, was sidelined for The Blades' 1-0 win against Barnsley last weekend and could return to partner Billy Sharp up front.

United have no other fresh injury or suspension worries heading into the game.

Defender Chris Armstrong is still on the injury list after undergoing surgery on his groin last week, while Danny Webber (knee) and Nick Montgomery (metatarsal) are also long-term absentees.
