There is a relegation six-pointer at Hillsborough on Saturday as Sheffield Wednesday lock horns with third from bottom Plymouth.

Owls' new boss Alan Irvine may hand Luke Varney a start after he returned to the club on loan until the end of the season.

Although Varney started the last two games on the substitutes' bench, he could be thrust into the starting line-up after Owls lost at Scunthorpe in midweek.

Francis Jeffers is in contention following a hamstring injury and another striker, Akpo Sodje, is in the shake-up as Irvine searches for a cutting edge.

Jermaine Johnson will be out for at least another four weeks due to his hamstring injury while Tommy Miller is also struggling with a similar problem.

Miller has had an injection to aid his recovery and could return to contention next week.

Pilgrims news

Plymouth Argyle boss Paul Mariner has the rare luxury of being able to name an unchanged side for their trip to Hillsborough.

Central defender Kari Arnason shrugged off a leg injury to play the full 90 minutes alongside the recalled Reda Johnson against Derby, and the duo should start again.

Johnson received an instant recall after returning from African Nations Cup duty with Benin.

Chris Barker has recovered from a calf injury and was introduced as a late replacement for Johnson, but he will be on the bench again.

Jim Paterson (hamstring) is still sidelined while new on-loan Fulham goalkeeper David Stockdale is likely to keep his place after keeping a clean sheet on his debut.

Stockdale replaced long-serving Romain Larrieu in Tuesday's starting XI.
