Clash: United and Bayern collide
Manchester United will attempt to overturn their first leg UEFA Champions League quarter-final defeat to Bayern Munich without the services of Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
United succumbed to a dramatic 2-1 loss late in the day at the Allianz Arena last week, but the attention was on Rooney as the striker limped from the field with an ankle problem.
The nation held its breath as they awaited news on the England talisman, and the forecast was better than expected as it was revealed the 35-goal striker would be out for three to four weeks.
However, reports circulated that Sir Alex Ferguson would have his top scorer back in time for the visit of Bayern - only for the United chief to dismiss such suggestions.
It means Dimitar Berbatov will most likely lead a three-pronged front line on his own, with Nani, Antonio Valencia and Ji Sung Park all vying for places in the support role.
The good news for Ferguson is that defender John O'Shea is in line for a return, which will bolster the Red Devils' backline after they were caught napping by Franck Ribery and Ivica Olic in the dramatic loss in Bavaria.
Elsewhere, the likes of Michael Owen (hamstring), Anderson (knee) and Wes Brown (foot) remain on the treatment table.
United were dealt a body blow in their hopes of chasing a treble on Saturday as they succumbed to title rivals Chelsea at Old Trafford, meaning the visit of Munich presents the chance to keep the trophy hunt alive.
And despite going into the tie a goal down, Rooney's second minute strike in Germany handed his team an all important away goal.
Munich coach Louis van Gaal is given a huge boost by the news of winger Arjen Robben's return to the squad.
Robben has been struggling with a calf injury of late and missed the German giant's defeat of Schalke at the weekend, although he is in contention to add to the guile on offer from the Bundesliga outfit.
His recall to the first XI could add to the goal threat posed by Ribery on the opposite flank, as Munich look to seal a place in the semi-finals against Bordeaux or Lyon.
Daniel van Buyten also comes back into the fold after undergoing treatment on a knock picked up in the win over Schalke.
Munich have taken the European crown four times in their history, and the odds of progression look healthy given United have only once reversed a first leg deficit, back in 2007 when they thrashed Roma 7-1.
