Wigan steal derby honours

Wigan's excellent start to the season continued at the JJB Stadium as goals from Henri Camara and Lee McCulloch secured a 2-1 win over North West neighbours Bolton.

Radhi Jaidi made for an anxious final 20 minutes when he netted a header, which proved nothing more than a consolation for Sam Allardyce's side.

If The Premiership is currently suffering from a defensive malaise then nobody has thought to tell Paul Jewell, as from the off Wigan tried to catch cold a leg-weary Bolton side who had spent midweek in Bulgaria successfully de-railing Lokomotiv Plovdiv in the Uefa Cup.

With Jason Roberts and Camara a pacey handful upfront, the home side could have taken the lead in only the second minute when McCulloch failed to connect properly from the edge of the box.

An improving Hidetoshi Nakata bent a free-kick over as Bolton tried to find a foothold, whilst Roberts's first time drive on the volley arched narrowly wide of Jussi Jaaskelainen's near post.

Pascal Chimbonda's afternoon of attacking forays was curtailed early as a crude challenge from Kevin Davies forced him off, before John Filan parried Kevin Nolan's close range effort with a brave stop.

As Bolton settled in to a cohesive rhythm as the half progressed, a trademark Nolan run went close to breaking the deadlock but the freescoring midfield lobbed just wide.

If Bolton had the middle section of a breezy if unspectacular first period, Wigan stole the latter moments as first Jimmy Bullard failed to register with a tame header and then McCulloch miscued from close range.

Wigan started the second half as they did the first and were rewarded for their adventure within three minutes of the restart. Camara started the counter attack with a driving run towards goal but having waited too long to deliver his pass, the opportunity looked to have been lost.

However, when the ball found its way to Bullard his cross located the head of Bruno N'Gotty whose suicidal clearance across goal only found Camara - who finished with an exquisite dink over Jaaskelainen.

Bolton summoned Stelios Giannakopoulos and El Hadji Diouf from the bench but save for a Davies header cleared off the line after indecisive goalkeeping from John Filan, Wigan were always were the better side.

Looking dangerous on the counter, Wigan duly doubled their advantage in the 63rd minute when McCulloch arrowed a sublime half volley home from just inside the box.

With the game looking dead Bolton's incessant resolve came to the fore, as Jaidi planted a firm header past Filan from Stelios' delivery from the right flank in the 68th minute.

Roberts should have netted after Camara had jinxed around Jaaskelainen before the African went himself and pinged an effort just wide.

Damien Francis saw a fantastic volley brilliantly tipped over before Stelios squandered a glorious chance, with just minutes remaining to steal a point for Bolton, when he blazed over from close range.
