Mike Edwards struck his third goal of the season as high-flying Notts County extended their unbeaten run to eight games with a 1-0 victory over Crewe.

But the game ended in ugly scenes as Luke Rodgers and Ashley Westwood were both dismissed after the former Crewe striker high-kicked the youngster, sparking a melee.

Crewe started brightly and Shaun Miller had the first sight of goal, unleashing a shot which had County goalkeeper Kasper Schmiechel flapping.

Jamie Clapham drilled wide for the Magpies before Stephen Hunt made a mess of a free header from Ben Davies corner.

Chris Stokes went close with a rasping drive for the Alex, but the visitors were handed a 34th-minute penalty when the defender brought down Davies at the other end.

Luckily for Crewe, keeper Steve Phillips pulled off a superb save to keep out Davies' well-struck spot-kick.

County responded well to the setback and took the lead six minutes into the second half. Jamie Clapham swung in a free-kick and Edwards nodded in at the far post.

Crewe substitute Steven Schumacher came close to levelling matters but his goalbound header was nodded to safety by Hunt.

Rodgers missed a great chance to kill the game off with two minutes remaining, firing straight at Phillips from six yards, before he saw red with Westwood in stoppage-time.
