Midfielder Danny Whitaker bagged a hat-trick as Chesterfield ripped Hereford apart 4-0 at the b2net Stadium.

Defender Simon Ford completed the rout but Hereford missed a second half penalty when the score was 2-0.

Whitaker got things moving in the ninth minute, when goalkeeper Adam Bartlett was penalised for a foul on Jack Lester, allowing Whitaker to net from the spot.

Mathieu Manset was denied an equaliser in the 14th minute when Tommy Lee tipped over his header but Whitaker scored again with a clever finish when Lester's pass cut open Hereford's defence (33).

The visitors were awarded a penalty when Manset was tripped as he went past Lee who was booked but Ryan Valentine's low spot kick was pushed behind by the keeper.

It was a costly miss because Chesterfield sealed the points when Whitaker bagged his third on the hour after Bartlett had denied Lester and two minutes later Simon Ford headed in a corner to complete the scoring.
