Paul Thirlwell hit a stoppage-time equaliser to salvage a 1-1 draw at Colchester which kept Carlisle top of League One.

Thirlwell swept home in the third minute of injury time from close range after Gary Madine had fired the ball into a crowded area.

Colchester were the better side in the first half and took the lead just before the half-hour mark. Brian Wilson's deep cross was headed in convincingly from close range by on-loan striker David Mooney for his first league goal for the U's.

Anthony Wordsworth was denied by goalkeeper Adam Collin before half-time but Carlisle were much improved in the second half and Craig Curran and Francoise Zoko went close for the visitors.

U's goalkeeper Mark Cousins pulled off a fine one-handed save to foil the impressive Madine shortly after the hour mark and Zoko hit the bar with an acrobatic effort before Thirlwell struck late on to salvage a point for the Cumbrians.
