Ten-man Southend gained their first league win of the season with a deserved 2-0 success at Bradford on Friday evening.
The visitors, who were relegated from League One at the end of last term, had gained only one point from their first three matches but shook Bradford by going ahead after 16 minutes when Barry Corr lobbed the ball over the head of keeper Jon McLaughlin after collecting a lofted pass from Ryan Hall.
Bradford manager Peter Taylor, who played for and managed Southend, introduced his three substitutes at the start of the second half but they had little effect on the course of the match and the visitors went further in front after 54 minutes with a low 25-yard shot from Anthony Grant after Sean Clohessy's angled pass had been played into his path.
Bradford posed little threat on the Southend goal. James Hanson missed their best chance in the first half, shooting wide of advancing keeper Glenn Morris, while Gareth Evans snatched at a good chance six minutes from the end, sending the ball wide of the angle of the post and crossbar.
The only blot on the night for Southend was the sending off of Clohessy for the second bookable offence in the 76th minute.
