Borussia Monchengladbach strengthened their grip on third place in the Bundesliga with two deflected goals earning them a 2-0 win over Paderborn.

Fabian Johnson's first goal of the season gave Lucien Favre's men an early lead and Patrick Herrmann settled their nerves late on.

The win, coming just three days after they were eliminated from the Europa League, gives them a four-point advantage over fourth-placed Bayer Leverkusen in the race for a place in the Champions League group stage next season.

Paderborn, meanwhile, end the weekend inside the bottom three for the first time this season, with 11 games to go.

Luck was certainly on Gladbach's side, making up for Thursday night when it had been lacking against Sevilla in the Europa League.

Their first shot of the game found the back of the net, with Johnson's shot taking a deflection off Patrick Ziegler and wrong-footing Lukas Kruse in the Paderborn goal.

Uwe Hunemeier almost netted an own goal soon after as Gladbach, whose last three Bundesliga wins have all been by 1-0 scorelines, looked to sweat a little less for the points this time.

Instead, Paderborn refused to lie down and be beaten without giving Yann Sommer some work to do in the Foals' goal.

However, the better chances continued to fall at the other end, where Branimir Hrgota almost scored before the interval and he lifted his next effort over the crossbar after an hour's play.

Paderborn continued to cause problems before Herrmann relieved the pressure with Gladbach's second just 10 minutes from time.

Kruse punched the ball clear but Herrmann's shot took a deflection off Alban Meha with the Paderborn goalkeeper once again left flat-footed.

Meha tried to make amends with a direct free-kick which only just missed the target before Herrmann hit the post having galloped through the Paderborn defence in the last minute.
