Montpellier 2-3 Monaco: Fabinho's late spot-kick helps seals visitors' comeback

Fabinho scored a controversial penalty in the fifth minute of stoppage time as Monaco came from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Ligue 1 basement boys Montpellier.

The Brazilian defender sent goalkeeper Jonathan Ligali the wrong way from the spot to cap a second-half fightback and leave the hosts still looking for their first win of the season.

Montpellier, with just a solitary point to their name, looked to be heading for three points when they went into half-time two goals up thanks to Daniel Congre's effort and Guido Carrillo's own goal.

But Fabio Coentrao, with his first goal for the club since joining from Real Madrid, pulled one back and Thomas Lemar equalised in the 66th minute, before Ligali was adjudged to have fouled Coentrao to give the visitors the chance to grab the winner at the death.

And Fabinho made no mistake from the spot to earn Monaco their third win from seven league games.

The home side went in front in the 27th minute when an inswinging corner from the right from Ryad Boudebouz was met at the near post by a glancing Hilton header.

Danijel Subasic made an impressive reaction save, but Congre was on hand to stab home the rebound. It was a goal Montpellier's early pressure deserved.

Another dangerous Boudebouz delivery, this time a free kick from out on the right, set up number two, causing chaos in the Monaco area and resulting in the ball hitting the back of Carrillo and going in.

Monaco hit back in the 57th minute, also with a right-wing corner.

This time Lemar's set piece went all the way through to Coentrao at the back post, and the Portugal international had time and space to bring the ball under control before lashing it low into the net.

Montpellier's defensive frailties were exposed again with the equaliser as Nabil Dirar's low cross was allowed to go untroubled across the box for Lemar to tap in at the back post.

Monaco completed the turnaround when Ligali failed to claim a right-wing cross and collided with Coentrao as he tried to gather the ball, conceding a penalty.

It looked a clear foul on first viewing, but replays suggested the collision was accidental and the penalty award harsh.

Fabinho, though, showed no mercy from the spot.
