Derby boss Paul Jewell has confirmed that teenage star Giles Barnes is likely to miss the rest of the season.
The midfielder suffered a knee injury during training last week and it remains unclear just how serious the problem is.
With the Rams already resigned to relegation, their boss admits that they will not rush their prize asset back into the first-team action and will instead concentrate on ensuring that he is ready to play in a part in next season's promotion bid.
"It is a bad blow for the lad, but hopefully with rehabilitation he will be back sooner rather than later," Jewell told the club's official website.
"Obviously this season has been a disaster as far as staying up is concerned, so it obviously wouldn't make sense to rush anyone back with next season in mind."
Barnes joins fellow long-term absentees Claude Davis and Tyrone Mears in the treatment room, but Jewell remains confident that he will have a full squad to work with over the summer.
"Claude's operation (on a knee injury) was very successful, but from the date of that to training again is four months, so he'll be fine for pre-season in June," he said.
"Ty is making more progress (from a calf problem) because he has been running, and come pre-season they'll both hopefully be starting."
Meanwhile, Dean Leacock is expected to return to training this week after shaking off a hip problem picked up in the 2-0 defeat to Wigan on 23rd February.
