Diego Fabbrini has returned to Birmingham City on a permanent deal after signing from Watford for £1.5m.
The Italian midfielder spent the last few weeks of last season on loan at St Andrew's and played five games.
He has now returned there as they look to win promotion back to the Premier League and has agreed a three-and-a-half-year contract.
Fabbrini had been a regular in Aitor Karanka's Middlesbrough team which currently sits second in the Sky Bet Championship table, making 17 starts and scoring six goals in a successful loan deal.
He last played for them on January 9, scoring in a 3-1 FA Cup defeat to Burnley, and has mutually agreed with the club to terminate his deal there in order to join Birmingham.
Fabbrini is a full Italy international having earned a cap against England in a 2-1 defeat in Bern in August 2012, playing the final six minutes as a substitute and receiving a yellow card.
He started his career with Empoli in his homeland and also turned out for Udinese and Palermo before arriving at Vicarage Road in 2013.
The 25-year-old returned to Italy temporarily to play for Siena and also had a spell at Millwall, meaning he played just 29 times in all for Watford.
Fabbrini has been given the No 7 shirt at Birmingham and is expected to be in their squad for Saturday's trip to Bristol City.
