Defender Sebastian Coates has left Sunderland and joined Sporting Lisbon on loan for the rest of the season.
The 25-year-old defender passed his medical in the Portuguese capital on Thursday.
The Black Cats completed the signing of a second defender in the winter transfer window on Wednesday, bringing French centre-back Lamine Kone in from Lorient.
Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce also signed Jan Kirchhoff from Bayern Munich, and Coates is surplus to requirements at the Stadium of Light.
Coates - a Uruguay international with 17 caps - signed from Liverpool last summer after a relatively successful season-long loan during 2014-15.
He has made 14 Premier League starts this season, but Sunderland have struggled around the foot of the table and currently sit second-bottom, four points adrift of safety.
