Motherwell manager Mark McGhee has given James McFadden an open offer to stay at Fir Park for the rest of the season.
McFadden's short-term deal expired before Motherwell's 1-0 defeat by Partick Thistle on Tuesday night.
The 32-year-old forward has been aiming to secure a move to the United States but a trial spell with Philadelphia Union has not led to a deal.
McGhee said: "The offer is on the table for James, James knows the situation. If he goes to America we will wish him luck, if he doesn't then he's welcome to stay."
Motherwell signed Morgaro Gomis on loan from Hearts on Deadline Day, the midfielder coming off the bench for the final half hour at Firhill, but McGhee was frustrated in his attempts to seal more signings.
However, he will not bring in any players just to increase the numbers having cut down a bloated squad during January.
"We will have a look at one or two who are free agents and we will see but we are not desperately rushing around trying to do that," he said.
Meanwhile, central defender Ben Hall is hopeful he will be able to face Inverness in the Scottish Cup fifth round at Fir Park on Saturday.
The 19-year-old went off with a hamstring injury at Firhill but responded well to treatment on Wednesday morning.
Hall said: "I've improved a lot overnight so I will just have to take it day by day and see how I am for Saturday.
"Saturday is a game I would like to play in with it being the Scottish Cup as Motherwell haven't being doing very well in it in recent years and we would like to get as far as we can in the competition."
