Jose Baxter suspended by Sheffield United

Jose Baxter of Sheffield United

Sheffield United have announced they have suspended forward Jose Baxter.

In a brief statement, the League One club said on Friday: "Sheffield United Football Club can confirm that Jose Baxter has been suspended.

"Procedures are being followed and no further comment will be made until the completion of these actions."

No indication was given as to why disciplinary action has been taken against the 24-year-old, who scored 13 goals in 48 appearances last season, adding seven in 28 appearances for Nigel Adkins' side this campaign.

Baxter, who joined Sheffield United in August 2013, having previously been the youngest player to make his debut at Everton, has been suspended by the Blades before.

That was in May last year, for failing a drugs test when traces of ecstasy were found in a routine sample.

He was handed a five-month ban, three of them suspended, by the Football Association but was able to begin playing again before the start of this season.

During his time at Everton, Baxter was released without charge after being arrested on suspicion of possession of cannabis with intent to supply back in 2009.

This week, he made a public apology to the fans following the 1-0 defeat to Bury, saying the players had been letting the club down. United have won only one of their last five games and are five points outside the play-off places.
