Bristol City goalkeeper Frank Fielding will be sidelined for up to four months after ankle surgery.

The 28-year-old, understudy to Richard O'Donnell at Ashton Gate since February, damaged ankle ligaments while playing for the U21s earlier this month.

Fielding, signed for an undisclosed fee from Derby in June 2013, has made nearly 100 appearances for the Robins and began the season as first choice before the arrival of O'Donnell from Wigan in early February.

"Unfortunately Frankie has had to undergo an operation on a high ankle ligament injury where it's split in half," head coach Lee Johnson said.

"It's quite a nasty one so his recovery time is going to be a good three to four months, which is unfortunate for him because he's had a bit of an up and down season with injuries.

"I know that he's frustrated and so are we, but he's had the operation and it's gone very well, which is good.

"He's a great kid so he'll bounce back, but it just means his summer is cut down a little bit due to obviously having to rehabilitate the injury."
