Marco Reus has been left out of Germany's Euro 2016 squad after failing to recover from injury.

National coach Joachim Low said the Borussia Dortmund midfielder will be missing from the finals this summer, revealing the decision to leave Reus out was taken because "he has huge health problems and can only run straight at the moment".

Julian Brandt, Karim Bellarabi and Sebastian Rudy have also been cut from the provisional 27-man squad.

Reus, who turned 27 on Tuesday, also missed Germany's successful 2014 World Cup campaign in Brazil through injury and national team doctors have decided he would struggle for game time this summer.

"It's a shame because he would have strengthened us," Low said. "The medical staff could not give a clear prognosis for Marco.

"He has massive injury problems and the medical staff was very sceptical about his ability to last through the coming weeks and such a gruelling tournament. It is a bitter decision and bitter for Marco."

Despite injury problems of his own this campaign, Bastian Schweinsteiger has been included in the 23-man squad along with Liverpool's Emre Can and Mesut Ozil of Arsenal.

World Cup winners including Manuel Neuer, Toni Kroos, Thomas Muller and Mario Gotze have also been included in the final 23, as has Mats Hummels, who will move from Dortmund to Bayern Munich next season.

There was a recall for striker Mario Gomez, who has impressed with Besiktas this season after missing the World Cup two years ago, while former Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski will also be going to France.

Low told reporters at a press conference that Schweinsteiger and fellow injury doubt Mats Hummels will be ready to take part in the tournament.

"I know that it's a major disappointment for those players who aren't going to be involved," Low said. "Mats Hummels and Bastian Schweinsteiger will be fit for Euro 2016. The prognosis was clear."

Germany will play Hungary in Gelsenkirchen on Saturday before opening their Euro 2016 campaign against Ukraine on June 12.
