Wigan Athletic have signed midfielder Shaun MacDonald from Bournemouth for an undisclosed transfer fee.

The 28-year-old, who has made four appearances for Wales, has put pen to paper on a two-year deal at the DW Stadium after agreeing personal terms and passing a medical on Friday afternoon.

MacDonald, started his career at his hometown club Swansea City, but failed to secure a regular first-team place and moved on to Bournemouth in August 2011 following four separate loan spells with Yeovil Town.

He was part of the Cherries side that progressed from League One to the Premier League but he only featured in three top-flight games as a substitute last season and has been allowed to move on by Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe.

Wigan manager Gary Caldwell told his club's official website: "Shaun is a quality addition to the squad. A terrific pro who understands the way we want to play, a skilful midfielder capable of fitting into our system.

"He is a great person too, with a great attitude who has gone through a similar experience at Bournemouth to where we are now, a team coming up from League One to the Championship and playing a certain brand of football.

"The fact he has recent international experience with Wales shows just how highly he is rated."

MacDonald signed too late to make his Latics' debut in Saturday's Championship home game against Blackburn Rovers but he is likely to feature in the squad for the visit of Birmingham City to the DW Stadium on Tuesday.

The arrival of MacDonald comes a day after Wigan sold midfielder Emyr Huws to Championship rivals Cardiff City.
