Lyon confirm Mathieu Valbuena alive and well after 'despicable' social media death rumour

Lyon have hit out at "despicable" social media reports that claimed French international Mathieu Valbuena had died.

"Mathieu Valbuena is happily alive and well contrary to what those despicable individuals are spreading on Twitter," the club tweeted on Monday, alongside a photograph of the player.

The Ligue 1 side acted after a number of social media posts claimed the 32-year-old died on Sunday.

"Lyon are horrified at such disgraceful and inhuman acts," the club added.

Valbuena, who has 52 France caps, has endured a nightmare 2016 and is currently sidelined with injury.
