Pep Guardiola has revealed that Vincent Kompany missed Manchester City's trip to Borussia Monchengladbach because of a fresh knee injury.

It was thought Kompany had missed the trip to Germany because of a concussion suffered during the 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Guardiola, however, has now revealed that the central defender has suffered another knee injury and is expected to be out of action for weeks, and not days as previously thought.

Kompany had only recently returned to first-team duties for City following a four-month lay-off after undergoing groin and thigh surgery at the start of Guardiola's reign in Manchester.

"He has a problem with his knee," Guardiola confirmed during a press conference. "He could be out for weeks. He's sad and I'm sad. It's a long time he doesn't play.

"He is in the best hands so he can recover as soon as possible. He will make the best treatment possible.

"The doctor told me a few weeks [that Kompany will be out]. We'll see. It is ligaments."

Guardiola refused to comment on whether he would omit Kompany from his Champions League squad, if Manchester City make the knock-out stage of the competition.

"Now is not the moment, first we have to qualify for the next round," he said.

"After that we'll have to decide at the right moment. I decided in August about the squad for that period, until November and December.

"Now we're going to decided in that moment what is the situation. We'll have to look for whether Vincent can finally play regularly in the team.

"We have to try and help him to get that regularity, training week after week and to be able to play more often. Right now that's the most important thing."
