Bastian Schweinsteiger has been told to punish Manchester United by seeing out his contract "until his last day".

The World Cup winner has been frozen out completely under Jose Mourinho and was not even named in United's Europa League squad.

Mourinho only recently recalled Schweinsteiger to first-team sessions after weeks training with the club's youngsters, and the 32-year-old is yet to play this season as he approaches the final 18 months of his deal.

Now his former Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has advised him to take United for every penny he can before quitting football for good.

"If I were him, I would make the people in Manchester pay until his last day," Hoeness, quoted by ESPN, said on a visit to a Bayern supporters' group.

"That's what this club deserves for what they've done to him. They should be punished."

Schweinsteiger said earlier this year United would be his last club in Europe, raising the prospect of a move to Major League Soccer.

But Hoeness said: "From what I have heard, Basti's on his way out of football. I know him well and I doubt he's still got the fire left in him for one final major challenge.

"After such a brilliant career, a player like him shouldn't see out his career in a place like America. For me, America simply isn't an alternative for a player of his calibre.

"As far as I know, he's committed to a massive farewell game at Bayern. I would do that but then I would retire."

Schweinsteiger's haul of trophies during 13 years at Bayern included eight Bundesliga titles and the 2013 Champions League, and the midfielder was a key member of the Germany side that won the 2014 World Cup.
