Birmingham City are interested in signing defender Tommy Elphick from Aston Villa, Sky sources understand.

The 29-year-old centre-half started last season with the armband at Villa Park but lost it to James Chester before losing his starting place.

The arrival of John Terry at Villa means Elphick faces an uphill battle to force his way back into Steve Bruce's starting line-up.

Elphick won promotion to the Premier League with Bournemouth as captain and was brought to Villa by former boss Roberto Di Matteo.

If he does join Birmingham, Elphick would become Harry Redknapp's fourth signing of the summer following the arrivals of goalkeeper David Stockdale, central defender Marc Roberts and midfielder Cheikh Ndoye.

Sky sources say new Sunderland manager Simon Grayson is also interested in bringing Elphick to the Stadium of Light.
