Burton Albion have signed Joe Mason on loan from Championship rivals Wolves until January 2.

The 26-year-old, who has represented the Republic of Ireland at U21 level, will bolster the Brewers' options in attack after Liam Boyce was ruled out for the majority of the season with a serious knee injury.

Burton manager Nigel Clough said: "It wasn't so much a case of missing out on Cauley Woodrow; we were making enquiries about Joe at the same time and we are delighted to get a deal done until January.

"It's a bit like the Sean Scannell situation - 26 years old, approaching his prime, wants to play games and we are looking forward to seeing him play for us.

"We need goals and when you lose your main striker for that then now we are building up other options and we are not ruling out getting someone else in as well.

"Now we have Joe, Lucas Akins, Sean Scannell, Luke Varney and Marvin Sordell we have options."

Mason watched Burton's 2-1 comeback win over Birmingham last Friday and was impressed with what he saw.
