Manchester City pulled the plug on a Deadline Day move for West Brom defender Jonny Evans.

The Northern Ireland international, currently in San Marino with the international team for their World Cup Qualifier, had been the subject of bids from City and Arsenal this month.

Arsenal have previously offered £25m plus an unknown player, while City had an £18m bid rejected. Leicester also expressed interest in the former Manchester United centre-half.

A number of factors had to line up on Deadline Day for a deal to go through, and none of those happened ahead of 11pm on Thursday.

For a deal to be pushed through for Evans, Eliaquim Mangala had to complete his transfer to Crystal Palace, but that move did not materialise, despite the Eagles making an £18m bid.

It was not the perfect transfer window for City manager Pep Guardiola, who had also been hoping to capture Alexis Sanchez - but Arsenal rejected their £60m bid on Deadline Day.

Northern Ireland travel to San Marino on Friday evening for their latest Group C World Cup Qualifier, live on Sky Sports Mix.
