Basel joined Roma in qualifying after a late goal condemned Crvena Zvezda to a draw.Basel were left thanking a late, late goal as they joined Roma in the knockout stages of the Uefa Cup when Crvena Zvezda relinquished a two goal lead away at already qualified Strasbourg.
Roma made sure of their continuing participation as they defeated the Swiss outfit 3-1 at Stadio Olimpico to finish second, but Basel were handed an unlikely reprieve thanks to results in France.
It looked like being a gloomy night for Christian Gross's men when, after just 14 minutes, Brazilian Rodrigo Taddei scored an opener for the Giallorossi when his half-volley beat Pascal Zuberbuhler.
On the break of half time the Serie A side, who needed a victory to ensure their safe passage, doubled their lead when club captain Francesco Totti collected a pass from Alberto Aquilani and fired past the Basel keeper.
Former Monaco marksman Shabani Nonda made it three just five minutes after the break as he produced a neat finish from a Taddei pass, and Basel still had time for what looked like a consolation when Mladen Petric found the net with twelve minutes to go.
Basel had been heading out of the competition, but Crvena Zvezda contrived to let a two goal lead slip in the dying seconds as they travelled to group winners Strasbourg.
The French outfit, already sure of their place in the knockout stages, went a goal down on 34 minutes when Dusan Basta fired home from close range.
The side from Serbia & Montenegro then looked to have sealed their passage when Adrijan Djokaj fired home from the edge of the box, but Kevin Gameiro broke their hearts with a late double strike.
The Strasbourg man first headed home from an Ulrich Le Pen cross with 11 minutes to go, before waiting until four minutes of injury time had elapsed to score from a set piece to send the visitors crashing out of the competition.
