Southampton have appointed Mark Wotte as their new head coach on a permanent basis following Jan Poortvliet's resignation.
With Southampton struggling at the foot of the Championship table Dutchman Poortvliet (pictured) has decided he is not the man to guide them to safety, after tendering his resignation on Friday.
Poortvliet resigned with immediate effect after less than eight months, having seen Saints struggle badly this season - particularly at home, where they have won just one of 14 league matches.
The responsibility for lifting Southampton out of the relegation zone will now fall to Wotte, the former RKC Waalwijk manager, who had been serving as assistant to Poortvliet.
Southampton confirmed in a club statement that Wotte would act as head coach for Tuesday's game against Norwich, but have now revealed he has been promoted to the position on a permanent basis.
It will not be a short-term appointment, though, with Saints stressing the experienced 48-year-old is being promoted from his back-seat role to lead the club on a full-time basis.
A press conference has been called for Monday.
