Striker signs for Sion after leaving Plymouth

Former Manchester City and Plymouth Argyle striker Emile Mpenza has joined Swiss side FC Sion on a free transfer. Mpenza failed to secure a new deal at Plymouth at the end of last season and has now signed a two-year contract, with the option of a further 12 months, at Sion. The Belgium international joined Plymouth last September, but managed just nine appearances and two goals for the Championship club. He had previously had a spell in the Premier League with City and numbers Standard Liege, Schalke and Hamburg among his former teams. Meanwhile, Plymouth boss Paul Sturrock has confirmed he is looking to trim the numbers in his squad and will use pre-season training to determine who will leave Home Park. "The essence of life for players at this club is to get themselves in the pecking order through performance in training and in friendlies," Sturrock told The Herald. "If they are to move on, they need a pre-season under their belts. That is vitally important for the individual player, for them to progress with whatever team they finish up with. "To that end, I'm working very hard to get the appropriate number moved on, and for their sake as well. "We have 30 players training, which is not ideal when you want to work on certain things for games and to get the shape of the team. "It is something we are trying to address as quickly as possible."
