FC Groningen have confirmed the appointment of Robert Maaskant as the club's new coach to replace the sacked Pieter Huistra.

New coach backed to bring a breath of fresh air to the club

FC Groningen have confirmed the appointment of Robert Maaskant as the club's new coach to replace the sacked Pieter Huistra. The Euroborg club dispensed with Huistra earlier this month after finishing 14th in the Eredivisie and have brought in Maaskant on a one-year contract. Maaskant brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously trained RBC Roosendaal, Willem II and NAC Breda, in addition to winning the Polish league title in 2011 with Wisla Krakow. Groningen's technical director, Henk Veldmate, believes Maaskant can help revive the club's fortunes, telling the club's official website: "After the departure of Pieter Huistra, we had a clear preference for a candidate from outside of the club.

Right man

"We believe our current situation calls for a sporting breath of fresh air and we think, as a coach and a person, Robert Maaskant is the right man to bring us that. "He has extensive experience at the highest level and that may be of value for our squad." Meanwhile, Groningen have also wrapped up the signings of striker Genero Zeefuik, midfielder Michael de Leeuw and winger Mitchell Schet. Zeefuik has arrived from PSV Eindhoven, De Leeuw has signed for a nominal fee from De Graafschap and Schet has moved from RKC Waalwijk on a free transfer.
