Davide Astori has been called-up to the Italy squad for Euro 2012 as cover for Andrea Barzagli, who is struggling with a calf injury.
Juventus defender Barzagli picked up the injury during Italy's 3-0 friendly defeat to Russia in Zurich on Friday.
The Italian football federation confirmed that Astori was due to join up with the squad on Wednesday, while Barzagli's fitness will continue to be monitored until the weekend.
Italy coach Cesare Prandelli has up to 24 hours before Italy's first game against Spain on Sunday to replace injured players in his 23-man squad.
Barzagli is the latest disruption to Italy's backline after Domenico Criscito was dropped from the squad after being placed under investigation for match fixing last month.
Meanwhile, Prandelli, his coaching staff and the rest of the Italian playing squad paid their respects to the victims of the holocaust with a visit to the former Auschwitz-Birkenau death camps on Wednesday.
Three Italian survivors of the Holocaust guided the team around the grounds, while goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon placed a bouquet of white, red and green flowers - the colours of Italy's flag - at an execution wall and each player left a candle.
"Our generations are fortunate in that we've only seen these horrors in films and books," said defender Giorgio Chiellini.
"But having it right in front of your eyes, where it happened, and hearing from those who lived through it, is really incredible.
"I told my brother, 'If you come to see a match, you should go to the camps, too. It leaves you with emotions that are difficult to forget."
The Netherlands national side also visited the site on Wednesday while England, who are the other team based in the nearby city of Krakow, are planning to pay their respects with a visit later this week.
