The Germany international has missed the second half of the season after tearing his ligaments back in December and his recovery suffered a setback when he tore the very same ligaments in training.
He had only commenced light work at the end of April and now must undergo surgery once again, meaning another break of up to six months.
"Of course we will give him all the time in the world to get healthy again," said Sammer.
"We are optimistic. I am certain that he will come back stronger than ever."
The 24-year-old will go under the knife in Colorado this week in the clinic of renowned surgeon Dr Richard Steadman.
His last appearance was in a 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund on December 2.
