Laws running rule over duo

Brian Laws has challenged Scunthorpe trialists Deon Burton and Craig Fagan to impress him as the two strikers seek a new club.

Laws intends to run the rule over the pair in a friendly against Frickley Athletic on Tuesday night as the League Two outfit crank up their pre-season preparations. Scunthorpe are looking at Burton and Fagan, both without a club since respective releases from Gillingham and Bury, as they look to bolster their attacking options. Speaking to the club's official website, Laws said: "We are lacking a little bit in terms of numbers up top. "When big Chris (Iwelumo) isn't playing we seem to lack an edge at that end of the park. But, more than that, we also need different options. "Craig is a good link man between the midfielder and the striker. Deon's record at Gillingham was one in two. So with that in mind it was a no-brainer when the opportunity to have a look at them came along." Laws has long been an admirer of Burton in particular and jumped at the opportunity to take a closer look at the 36-year-old. "Deon was somebody we looked at earlier in the summer but at that time it looked like he would stay with Gillingham," Laws added. "However, for whatever reason that didn't happen so the chance for him to come here has arisen instead."
