The 33-year-old, who spent the second half of last season on loan with former club Wigan, is under contract until 2014, but the Hamburg hierarchy have told him that he is no longer needed, and is free to find a new club.
However, this has not deterred the Austria international from trying to prove his worth to the Bundesliga outfit, and insists anything can happen.
"I have not been given fair opportunity by the club," he told Kicker-Sportmagazin.
"Without a fair chance to prove myself I will not be leaving by choice.
"I am an experienced player. I know anything can happen throughout a campaign."
Meanwhile, Croatian forward Ivo Ilicevic is also unfazed that it is reported that he will be among the list of names to be departing the Imtech Arena.
"Thus far the club has always told me I am in their future plans," he added.
"I feel I owe this club. I went through some very tough times, so if I am just healthy and fit, the rest will come."
