Palmer pens new Brewers deal

Burton teenager Matty Palmer has signed a new three-year contract at the League Two club.

The promising 18-year-old midfielder had only recently signed his first professional terms but having impressed during pre-season, Albion boss Gary Rowett has kept his promise to reward Palmer with a long-term deal. "I offered him the deal at the end of last season," said Rowett. "What I said to Matty was he'd been in and around it last season in spells and there was an opportunity to offer him a longer deal. "But I wanted to see how he came back in pre-season - I said if I saw what I needed to see we would take it from there. "I wanted to see that hunger, desire and see him at the front in the running. He came back as fit as anyone else and has worked very, very hard over the summer and he looks a step ahead of where he was last season. "I didn't want to hand it to him on a plate. It's sensible (to do that) for the club anyway. But it gives him a little bit of security and he's done excellently - you can see what we think of him."
