The 24-year-old Obernai-born player has been at the South Coast club since the age of 18, but has been consistently overlooked by his homeland.
Midfield linchpin Schneiderlin has represented France from U16's right up to the U21's, but has continually been ignored at full international level.
However, Schneiderlin insists his dream is to one day wear Les Bleus' team jersey and is hoping he will receive a call-up from Didier Deschamps in the future so long as the Saints continue to do well.
He told L'Equipe newspaper: "A lot of people tell me, 'If you were English, you would already be in national team.
"My name is largely unknown in France, which is logical because I joined Southampton when they were playing in the Championship as an 18-year-old.
"Let's face it, Southampton is a club that doesn't make people dream. But my objective is to play for the French national team.
"I stand a good chance of a call-up if we remain in Premier League top six because we will then attract more interest.
"My success has shut a lot of people up who told me that I would lose myself at Southampton."
