On transfer deadline day, the 34-year-old defender took the decision to swap life at a Premier League struggler for that a Championship high-flyer.
The experienced centre-half agreed to step down a division after finding himself out of favour at Craven Cottage under Rene Meulensteen.
He could, however, be making his way back to the top flight at the end of the season if everything goes to plan at Loftus Road.
Hughes said in the Fulham Chronicle: "The irony of the situation? I know.
"People have been joking around with me for the last few days saying something along those lines.
"But this was an opportunity to play games, and when you get that at this stage in my career, and coming into the last few months of my contract, it was too hard to turn down."
Hughes will become a free agent in the summer once his Fulham contract expires, but has not ruled out the prospect of landing a permanent deal at QPR.
The Northern Ireland international added: "The plan is to do well over the last few months and what happens, happens.
"I play right-back for my country and I'll play wherever I'm asked."
