Transfer news: Mark Duffy believes Birmingham are the right team for him

Mark Duffy is convinced that he made the right choice in joining Birmingham City and can fulfil his ambitions at St Andrew's.

The 27-year-old has opted to move on this summer after activating a relegation release clause in his contract at Doncaster Rovers.

It appeared at one stage as though Birmingham would slip through the Championship trapdoor in 2013/14, but they survived on the final day to preserve their second tier status.

Duffy is convinced that the club will fare considerably better next season, with Lee Clark setting much loftier targets.

The ultimate aim is to secure a return to the Premier League, and Duffy believes it will not be long before Birmingham are pushing for promotion.

He said: “I’m absolutely over the moon, it’s a massive club.

“When I spoke to the gaffer, he was telling me about his plans and the players he’s going to be bringing in, there were positive vibes.

“I’ve spent quite a few weeks going around teams and listening to what they have to say and their plans.

“I went away with my agent and we agreed on Birmingham because it was a massive club with the ground, the facilities, the training complex but also the gaffer – the way he spoke and his passion.”

Duffy added: “I’m really appreciative for what Doncaster have done for me. John Ryan played a massive part in me going to Doncaster.

“I didn’t want them to get relegated. For me to come to the team that effectively got them relegated, the fans are going to be disappointed but I just think, at this moment in time, Birmingham are the right team for me.

“My aim is to get to the Premier League, that’s what I told the teams when I spoke to them.”
