FIFA have confirmed that David Luiz will be credited as the scorer of Brazil’s goal in their World Cup second-round win over Chile.
Brazil went 1-0 up in the 18th minute in Belo Horizonte when Thiago Silva flicked on a Neymar corner at the near post and the ball bounced in off Luiz and defender Gonzalo Jara as they competed for the ball at the back post.
In some replays, Jara appeared to have diverted the ball into the net, but a FIFA technical study group has ruled that former Chelsea defender Luiz will be considered the scorer.
The technical study group is composed of coaches and former players from across the world, and they have looked at the goal from all angles (there are 34 cameras in each stadium).
A FIFA spokeswoman said: "The technical study group has looked at this and the goal will remain awarded to David Luiz.
“They have studied it and say he definitely had the last touch."
The goal did not prove decisive as Alexis Sanchez equalised for Chile, and the match ended up going to extra-time and then penalties.
Luiz converted the first penalty of the shoot-out and the unfortunate Jara then hit the inside of the post with what proved to be the final kick of the match, sending Brazil through to the last eight.
