Sky Sports understands Middlesbrough have turned down a bid from Rotherham United for midfielder Richie Smallwood.

Smallwood played a huge part in Rotherham's successful promotion bid last season, helping them to a League One play-off final win over Leyton Orient having moved out to the New York Stadium on loan in January.

Millers boss Steve Evans has already brought in 11 new faces this summer to bolster his squad ahead of the 2014/15 Championship season.

But Evans remains a huge fan of the 23-year-old, who has a year left on his current deal after Boro took up an option on the Teessider at the end of the season.

Boro boss Aitor Karanka is known to have been impressed with Smallwood during his loan spell in south Yorkshire, and is set to give him his chance, during pre-season, to push for a first-team role - although Rotherham do look set to bid again.
