Transfer news: Sheffield United to send Andy Butler back out on loan

Sheffield United are planning to send Andy Butler back out on loan after seeing an agreement with Walsall collapse.

The 30-year-old defender, who only agreed a switch to Bramall Lane as a free agent over the summer, returned to his former employers at the Banks’s Stadium in September on a one-month deal.

An extension to that agreement was sanctioned, but Butler finds himself back at his parent club.

United boss Nigel Clough is, however, eager to find the centre-half regular game time and says he has already fielded enquiries from other interested parties.

Clough told the Sheffield Star: “We were surprised to see Andy back because we had already done a deal with Walsall, in principle, to extend.

“We’ve had a call from elsewhere though about taking him and so we’ll consider that over the next 48 hours.

“We’ve got Paddy (McCarthy) and Jay (McEveley) as the two first choices in there at the moment, Harrison (McGahey) and Chris (Basham) who played here (against Yeovil) and Craig Alcock can step in there too.

“Tom Kennedy, as we’ve seen, is available again as well now. So I think it would be unfair to keep Andy here at this moment.

“I think Walsall just told us they have got a few different priorities they’ve got to address now.

“We’ll look to get Andy elsewhere because he wants games and we’ll try to do something until January, if possible.”
