The future of Bolton midfielder Lee Chung-yong has been cast into doubt after he sustained a possible leg fracture at the Asian Cup which could kibosh any potential January transfer switch.

The South Korean, 26, is out of contract at the Macron Stadium this summer and Wanderers manager Neil Lennon last week admitted they were facing an uphill task to convince him to sign a new deal.

Bolton were therefore considering cashing in on a player Lennon believes is "the best in the division" during this transfer window but that possibility may not remain open to them after Lee suffered an injury on international duty.

The midfielder came off in his country's opening game of the Asian Cup against Oman following a meaty challenge and, with Lennon confirming he will be back in England to be assessed on Friday, question marks remain over Lee's future.

It is unclear how long Lee stands to be out for at the minute but Lennon conceded he was concerned given the player previously broke the same leg in 2011.

"The initial reports were it's a hairline fracture," Lennon told a press conference on Thursday. "He's due in tomorrow, we'll assess him then and see how he is.

"It's never a good thing when it's on the same area that he hurt the leg the first time. We're hoping if there is a fracture there it will heal very quickly.

"We're waiting on the scans back from the radiologist. He may have to go for another scan this week and then we'll assess it from there."
