William Kvist has played Champions League football and captained his country, but the challenge of keeping Wigan in the Sky Bet Championship is his current motivation.

The 30-year-old midfielder returned from a hamstring injury in the 1-0 loss to Leeds at the DW Stadium on Saturday, which left Latics eight points adrift of safety ahead of Saturday's pivotal showdown with Rotherham.

Kvist's experience of leading Denmark and playing for the likes of FC Copenhagen, Stuttgart and Fulham will be crucial to a much-changed Wigan squad and he assured supporters he is ready for the fight down the final stretch.

"I have played in the Champions League, the Premier League, the Bundesliga, but I'm so motivated for this task ahead of us, to keep us in the Championship," Kvist told the Wigan Evening Post.

"I hope people on the outside can see we are trying everything we can, 100 per cent, and getting those small, small details in our favour is just a hard job. I just want to be part of that, contributing to the team, and doing my bit."

Meanwhile, Latics are sweating on the availability of striker Leon Clarke for their trip to South Yorkshire.

Clarke missed out against Leeds with a hamstring strain and will be assessed this week.
