Luton's Benson loses appeal

Luton striker Paul Benson will be suspended for three matches after the club lost its appeal against his red card.

Benson was shown a straight red card by referee Darren Sheldrake against his former club Dagenham last weekend for a clumsy, high challenge on Ian Gayle. The Hatters felt they could get the dismissal overturned but the Football Association has upheld the decision. Benson's ban will begin on Saturday when Luton host Hartlepool at Kenilworth Road and the 35-year-old will also miss the remaining two League Two fixtures against Southend and Stevenage, meaning he will only be eligible to play again this season should John Still's side reach the play-offs.
