Lee Cattermole was at a loss to explain Sunderland’s lacklustre performance during their 3-1 home defeat at the hands of newly promoted Norwich.

The Black Cats were 2-0 down after 37 minutes, leading to many fans deciding to leave the Stadium of Light during the half-time interval.

Dick Advocaat’s men have now conceded seven goals in two games and the former captain could not explain the reasons behind such a torrid start to the season. They lost 4-2 at Leicester in their opening game.

“We need to look for a response quick and we need to find something quick. Whatever it is that we are missing we need to find it,” the 27-year-old told Sky Sports.

Dick Advocaat says Sunderland must go back to basics to put an end to their poor early-season form

“I thought we started the game okay. We were competitive but we lost the goal and as a team we fell apart at times and it was not good enough.

“We are conceding goals out of nothing at the moment. We were hoping that we would start the season the way we ended last season but we are almost unrecognisable at times and that is the disappointing thing.
