Sam Allardyce is the "perfect” man to take charge of Sunderland, former player Michael Gray has claimed.
The ex-England defender believes Allardyce has the experience and track record to get the Black Cats out of their slump.
Sunderland are searching for a new manager after Dick Advocaat resigned following the 2-2 draw with West Ham and Gray is a long-term admirer of former Bolton, Blackburn, Newcastle and West Ham boss Allardyce, who is the early bookmakers' favourite for the job.
He told Sky Sports News HQ: " I think he's perfect, I really do.
"I've said it for about four seasons when the club has been changing all these managers, Sam Allardyce is the man."
Gray, who played for Sunderland from 1992 until 2004, added: "He can work on a shoestring and he's done it before at Bolton Wanderers and at West Ham.
"He brought in players perfect for that club and got the best out of them.
"He's never been relegated and he's worked in the Championship so you know there's a great chance of bouncing back if they do get relegated."
Dutchman Advocaat left after a record of four wins from 19 matches having saved the club from relegation last season.
Sunderland lie in 19th place in the Premier League table with three points from eight matches.
