Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes is happy with the team's position in the Scottish Premiership at the moment.

Despite making an early exit from the Europa League, the Dons got their league campaign off to a superb start by winning their opening eight games.

But another cup exit, this time to Championship side Hibernian in the League Cup, has been followed by three successive league losses.

Away defeats to Inverness Caley and Ross County either side of a home thrashing to St Johnstone has resulted in Aberdeen moving from holding a five-point lead at the top of the table to dropping two points behind Celtic.

McInnes remains upbeat, though, and is hoping Aberdeen can rediscover their winning form when they play Motherwell at Pittodrie on Saturday. With Celtic not back in action until Sunday, a win for the Dons would see them return to the top of the table.

"Where we are is probably where most people thought we would be, we're just tucked in behind Celtic, we're slightly ahead of others. That's where we are in the league," McInnes said.

"Most teams or all teams will hit a poor patch of form at some stage of the season, hopefully we've had ours and we can come out of our bad form recently or poor form with a win on Saturday which would take us back to the top of the league.

"It's not often you can say that, that you come out of a poor run of form, you've had a few results that you could be sitting top of the league.

"We are mindful of that, we trust ourselves, we have good players in the dressing room, it's important we get that confidence from results rather than just from individuals."
