Wayne Rooney and Anthony Martial trained for Manchester United ahead of Wednesday's Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven, although key players remained on the sidelines.

Six players missed Tuesday morning's training session as United prepare for their Dutch visitors with Bastian Schweinsteiger, Ander Herrera, Antonio Valencia, Phil Jones, Michael Carrick and Luke Shaw all missing.

There will be some relief for boss Louis van Gaal who welcomed back his key forwards as United chase the win which would secure qualification for the knockout stages. Rooney has overcome illness, while French teenager Martial had a foot injury.

Memphis Depay started as a central striker on Saturday and scored for the first time in six games at Watford in the Premier League but is likely to start elsewhere, if at all, for the Group B match at Old Trafford.

Marouane Fellaini, who has missed the last two games with a calf problem, also took part in the session at Carrington.

Jones (ankle) and Herrera (hamstring) were substituted during the win at Vicarage Road and both look doubtful. The reason for Schweinsteiger's absence is not known, while Shaw (leg) and Valencia (foot) are long-term absentees.

Michael Carrick, who suffered an ankle injury playing for England against Spain recently, was not present either.

With so many injuries, Van Gaal decided to include development squad players Regan Poole, Guillermo Varela, James Weir and Nick Powell in first team training.

Young striker James Wilson was also present after overcoming a knee injury.

United top Group B and will qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League if they beat PSV, who ran out 2-1 winners in the reverse fixture two months ago.
