Jack Butland tells Soccer Saturday about his battle with Joe Hart for the England number one shirt and his impressive club form

Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland has warned Joe Hart he wants to knock him off his perch as England's number one.

Butland has been one of the standout goalkeepers in the Premier League this season since taking over as first-choice stopper following Asmir Begovic's £9million switch to Chelsea.

He has become a regular in Roy Hodgson's England squads and won his third cap in the friendly against France after taking over from Hart at half-time.

Stoke manager Mark Hughes thinks the 22-year-old is providing genuine competition with Hart regarding the England No 1 spot, and Butland admits he wants to be his country's first choice.

"I'm massively passionate about playing for my country," Butland told Soccer Saturday.

"I've been fortunate enough to play at all the age groups but I'm not eligible for them anymore. I've got to try and make a move with the senior team.

"I get on with Joe Hart really well. He joined Birmingham on loan when I was there and to see him working day-in, day-out was brilliant.

"As I've progressed I've tried to model myself on him. Having him in the England set-up is brilliant. I want to try and make more saves than him and he tries to do it to me. It's a good battle and it's something that makes us both better. I've learnt a great deal off him but, of course, I want to get past him and take the No 1 shirt."

Stoke made it five wins from seven games last weekend with a 1-0 victory over Southampton at St Mary's.

Bojan's goal on 10 minutes was enough to separate the teams as the home side's six-game unbeaten run came to an end with Butland keeping his third clean sheet in a row.

He'll be going for number four on Saturday away at Sunderland.

"All round, we were really good last weekend. We limited an attacking team with great players to just one shot on target. That's great credit for the whole team," he said.

"We defended from the front and they resorted to hitting it long. Graziano Pelle couldn't get into the game and they couldn't get people around them. Because of that we were able to go up the other end and create chances."
