Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has undergone a successful operation to remove his appendix after missing his side’s 2-2 draw with Sunderland.
The German was taken ill ahead of the Premier League game at Anfield and had the surgery at Aintree hospital on Saturday afternoon.
Managerial responsibilities on match day fell to coaching staff including Zeljko Buvac, Peter Krawietz, Pepijn Lijnders and John Achterberg.
A brief statement on the club's website on Saturday lunchtime confirmed Klopp's condition.
The 48-year-old boss has overseen six Premier League victories since replacing Brendan Rodgers in October.
Liverpool finished the day in ninth having seen their two-goal advantage against the Black Cats wiped out in the final eight minutes with Jermain Defoe scoring a late equaliser in the 2-2 draw.
There remains a good chance of Klopp returning to duty for next weekend's trip to Aston Villa.
